Praise

At GBU Bari, we’re really grateful to the Lord for how this new academic year has begun. We had the pleasure of kicking off with an event, a discussion led by Professor Ken Smith on the subject of Science and Faith.

We were able to invite new students to the weekly meetings. The group has grown and is heterogeneous – there are Italians and non-Italians. We meet every Wednesday to read passages from Mark, and we thank God for all the students who are involved.

Prayer

Going back as far as last year, a number of non-believing students have been regularly attending. Pray the Lord would touch their hearts.

We’d also like to organise some outreach events in the University to meet new students. Pray for how we plan the various events we want to do, and for group cohesion and growth.

I can’t believe how generous Jesus has been to me! I became a follower of Jesus early at school in Australia – he transformed me and took away my big reasons to fear eternity and death.

After wrestling through big questions while studying philosophy and law, Jesus still persuades me that he is good and trustworthy – the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords – so now I want to worship him and share his huge love.

My Nonna lived across the road growing up (she is one of my closest friends). When I finished university in 2024 I wanted to come to Italy where she grew up to learn more from the GBU staff Simon and Jess Cowell and their kids about what it means to follow Him.

I Praise God daily for how he has provided for me to do this through generous Australians. I’m a bit clumsy, so have had to learn to laugh. I love chatting about philosophy and science! I’m still learning to love sundried tomatoes.

We thank God that we’ve started up weekly GBU meetings again this year.

We managed to split into two groups, one in Italian and the other in English. I’d like prayer for the Lord to add more and more people each day, who’d be interested in His Word and in being saved.

We’re organising an international food and drink party on 29 November, where everyone will bring a dish from their national cuisine, since we have so many international students. We’re asking the Lord to bring lots of new lives to our group, that it would be an outreach event to encourage non-Christians to take part in our future meetings, and that the Lord would give us the strength to serve Him and serve one another, doing His will.

GBU Bari would like to praise the Lord for how He’s led us and blessed us at this time.
In line with university lectures, GBU Bari started weekly meetings again on 20 October.

Praise
  • We thank God that after a year of meeting online, we’ve been able to meet in person again to spend some time studying and sharing the Word;
  • We thank the Lord for the new comers in the group, and for the new friendship connections being formed;
  • Moreover, we want to thank the Lord for having made the GBU tract distribution possible in some of the Bari Polytechnic halls, thereby making new contacts.
Prayer
  • that the group would become more united and want more and more to spread the Gospel “from student to student”;
  • for the distribution of tracts, which we’re planning to do in the university as well as in the Polytechnic, so that an increasing number of people will be able to get to know the Gospel.

Thank God we’ve been able to start doing our weekly Bible study again. In these first weeks we’ve been reflecting on a series of passages from the Gospel which clearly show Jesus as being the one who can achieve the impossible… we can’t stay indifferent when we come up against him!

Let’s thank the Lord for the new students who have joined our GBU group, for the main part freshers, and also for greater involvement of the various group members in the various Bible study meetings, despite being limited to having to only meet online via Google Meet.

Furthermore, we managed to do an online prayer meeting last Monday together with GBU Foggia, which was very encouraging and edifying and allowed us to share various prayer points. We’re hoping to be able to repeat this meeting at least once a month.

We’re planning to organise an outreach event in December but, due to the uncertain Covid situation, we don’t yet know whether we’ll do this in person or online… Pray that the Lord would give us wisdom and ideas for this event.

We’re asking for prayer that the group would draw closer together and that we’d be able to involve newcomers and freshers in the activities, despite the distance, and invite along non-believer students.

Moreover, I imagine you know that Puglia has become a Covid “orange zone”, therefore, pray that the Lord would continue to sustain and protect us.

We are full of enthusiasm in GBU Bari but there are only a few of us to sustain it. Sadly, the difficulty of managing to find suitable times for most of the members persists, hence we continue the meetings with two or three people at the most. We had thought about running two GBU study groups, one in the Polytechnic and one in the Polyclinic, hoping there might be a solution, given that the lecture times are completely different from one another, but that has not yet proved effective. We are unsure whether to keep to this idea or go back to the former plan of one weekly meeting.
We are asking for prayer for this because we would like to form a big group which, at the same time is constant. In the meanwhile we will not give up because the Lord is with us and we cannot do anything else other than make ourselves available for Him.

In addition to the GBU study, we have introduced a new meeting where we can meet and pray fervently, not just for GBU Bari but also for the various initiatives of other local GBU groups and, if we are informed about them, also the international GBU groups. We will do this twice a month at the home of our local staff members, the Cowell’s. Prayer is the best weapon available to us!

An idea we have been mulling around and which we are getting ready for is to put on conversation courses in English led by a member of our staff, Simon, who is a native speaker. The idea is to promote a social activity without aiming to evangelise, through which to spread news about the GBU’s existence which would indeed promote it.

On 25 January we managed to give out over 900 Gospels in conjunction with the Gideons in the province in the various Polytechnic foyers, and we put a tract about the GBU inside them. Despite the cold and the rain that day, we noticed that many young adults from the University appreciated the public gesture and were grateful for it, as they posted stories referring to it on the University Instagram profile. They had worked out the importance of the Person who had motivated us to do this (it really was a roller-coaster day!).

Another event that took place was the Spring Training, a joint project with GBU Foggia and GBU Chieti, on 23 March. During the meeting the topic of which passages to highlight while evangelising was covered. Aside from the worship and prayers said about the projects and difficulties facing three GBU groups, the day was structured by dividing us up into pairs and simulating an imagined conversation between an atheist or agnostic and a believer, and afterwards reconvening to share the points raised from the individual conversations as a group. It really was such a pleasure to see and hear the young adults encouraged to go back in a different spirit, more prepared to evangelise and more certain of how to go about it. It was also good to catch up with old friends and make new ones ready to share the same goal: to spread the knowledge of Jesus from student to student. We hope to put on another event like this again in a few months’ time.

Praise
  • Even though only a few of us have managed to meet up, we have succeeded in forming a tight-knit group, well in tune with one another, like a proper family.
  • Thanks to the Lord, we managed to get organised with the weekly meetings straight away.
  • We’ve also made contact with non-believers who were interested in taking part in the meetings.
Prayer
  • For a girl, M-E, who we met in a cafe during one of our meetings, and after we included her in our bible study, we left her our contact details. Pray that she’ll come to find us at our next meetings.
  • That we’ll find a way to involve most of the young adults who are interested.
  • For the giving out of GBU invitations at the universities, which we’ll be doing soon.

Simon and Jessica are Australians; Simon is from Sydney while Jessica is from a small country town 7 hours away (yes, Australia is big!). They met at the University of Sydney while they were part of the campus Christian group there. Simon has a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Jessica in Law.

They work together with GBU Siena, serving university students and also learning Italian language. They are both passionate to see students grow in their faith, whether getting to know Jesus for the first time or deepening their love for Him. They have two gorgeous daughters: Lydia (2014) and Emma (2016).

Jessica loves nothing better than to sit and chat, preferably with a cup of tea.

We are GBU Bari, we like to call ourselves GBU@BARI 3.2.
Why have we chosen that number? We are the third GBU group to be set up in this city… and this is the second year this group has been around.
Last year there were 2-3 of us, but this year there seem to be a lot more of us, praise God!

Praise:

  • We praise God for the number of additional students this year, we have grown from 3 to 7 now… and I hope still more will join.

Prayer:

  • That each of these members will feel in their hearts how important it is to serve the Lord as a student.
  • That we will get going with our meetings as needs to be done, and especially that we will find a day that suits everyone.
  • That we manage to distribute the New Testaments with the Gideons (an organisation that distributes New Testaments in schools, universities and hospitals). The date for this is due to be set in November.
